Lessons from the movie - OVERCOMER

After weeks of trying to re-watch OVERCOMER, I finally did. Even though I had seen it before I still had a lot of lessons to pick from the movie.
I thought to share a few with you.
Let's get started

God’s plans outweigh humans’
Coach Harrison had his next season planned out. So many matches to play and games to win, but God interrupted these plans. Most of his talented basket players had to move to another city due to the movement of the manufacturing plant.
He had to coach cross country. God had greater plans. To heal, restore, and reunite a family. He never felt he could do it, but God used the school principal, his wife, and Thomas Hills for him. It may be painful sometimes when God disrupts our plans, but it’s in our best interest. Would we rather follow our limited human understanding or follow God who has it all planned and figured out?

God’s sense of humor
On one of his visits to the hospital with his pastor, John Harrison accidentally enters Thomas Hill’s room while he was trying to avoid colliding with a patient who was being wheeled. He later found out that Thomas Hill is Hannah Scott’s father.

Other coaches had several contestants in their teams, but John Harrison had only one contestant who was also down with asthma. God truly uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. One with God is always a majority.

We are never alone
Prior to Hannah’s involvement in the cross-country race where she got to meet a lot of school mates who came to cheer her up, she was always on her own. Even at the cafeteria, while other students were sitting with their friends chatting, she sat alone.

Her experiences made her feel no one wanted her, but her encounter with Christ changed all this. God’s always with us and really never leaves. All he wants us to do is to come to him. God’s committed to blessing us with relationships. Friends and families. God never created you to live in isolation. Your tribe will always find you.

Winning the battle in the mind
What goes on in the mind affects what shows on your outside. Thomas Hill coached his daughter with the winning mentality. Even though the race had not happened.

"You don’t win races with just your legs. Defeat happens in your head first. This is a mental competition. Start thinking like a winner."
Our flesh says otherwise. Our flesh wants us to quits. Our strength failing, but we don’t run this race based on our feelings or emotions.
Keep the finish line in sight and never lose focus. God is with us every step of the way.

God’s reckless love
This is one of the central themes of the movie. God’s love for us and the length he would go to rescue us.

When you see a believer, whom God has shed his love abroad in his/her heart you will definitely know. In the way, they relate with others, the way they talk, the way they love, their dedication to the things of God, and more.

Your identity is in Jesus
What do you allow to define you? The number of followers you have on social media, your achievements? the culture, or your friends?
None of all this defines you. Your identity is in the one who created you. You are God's child.
"The creature gets to define his creation."

Forgiveness
It hurts when people wrong us, especially the ones we expected a lot from, but keeping grudge won’t help either. Hannah Scott had to forgive her Dad; even though it wasn’t easy, she had to do it. God helped her. Holding a grudge is a lot of weight. It may be hard, but the lord will help us.
Forgiveness will teach you are a prisoner too. Hate doesn't forge sane hearts, love does. - Selema Enang

God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness
Hannah Scott put all she had into the race. But towards the end, her human strength failed; she fell, but God was there to “carry” her through.

When we give our lives to God, we are safe in his hands.

John Harrison was able to influence his colleagues in accepting the decision made by the board. Are we able to influence the decision-making process in our place of assignment?
Can people trust and follow our suggestions?

When we follow God's plan, it's all going to turn out well in the end. We would always be grateful that we did at the end.
Emotional❤😀

Let me wrap it up here. But I can’t stop without talking about the love that the Harrisons’ shared. You got to love those couples. From the way, they supported each other, had each other back, and prayed together.

❤😀

You read to this point🙏. Take all my love😀

  1. The winning mentality is key for anyone anywhere. I grow it everyday. Your depiction gave me a vivid imagery of the movie. Keep great as always, Ayo.
